Travel

This page has three main sections:

Travelling to Nottingham

Travellers from outside the United Kingdom can get to Nottingham by arriving at one of its main airports first. Full details about airports in the UK can be found at the Guide to UK airports web site.

The nearest airport to Nottingham is the East Midlands airport (about 13 miles from Nottingham). The main other airports are: Birmingham International Airport (about 41 miles from Nottingham), London Heathrow Airport which is the main airport in the UK and it is used by most airlines (about 130 miles from Nottingham), Manchester Airport (about 89 miles from Nottingham), London Gatwick Airport (about 166 miles from Nottingham), and London Luton Airport (about 100 miles from Nottingham).

Once in the UK, travellers can get to Nottingham by:

  • trains: for information and booking see the national rail enquiries web site

  • buses: for information and booking see the National Express web site. Book the trip from "Heathrow Airport" to "Nottingham" (Service FK230, normally 3hr10 min long).
  • taxis: see Taxi Info web site for more information
  •

More information about these options are given below.

    From Nottingham East Midlands Airport:

Please note that some airlines offer competitively cheap tickets to/from the East Midland Airports especially for travellers from European countries. The main airlines at East Midlands Airports are: Ryanair, Easyjet, bimbaby, bmi. Travellers from non European countries may find much cheaper tickets if they fly to other airports such as Heathrow Airport.
There is a regular bus service to travel from East Midlands Airport to Nottingham called Skylink. This is a 24 hour service. This service leaves every 30 minutes during the day and every hour after 23:00. The cost of a single adult ticket is £5.00, with a monthly return ticket costing £8.00. Please check the website for up to date ticket prices and timetable. Please note that there is no direct train service between the East Midlands Airport and Nottingham.

A taxi from East Midlands Airport will cost around £25.00 each way.

    From Birmingham Airport:

1-   From the airport, take a train or a taxi to Birmingham New Street Station and then a direct train to Nottingham (1hr15min).

2-   Take a bus (National Express) from the Airport directly to Nottingham. The trip will have one change and it normally takes about 3hr 30min in total. There is not normally a significant difference in price between this option and the previous one. Please check the National Express website and the National Rail website for prices of specific dates and times.

3-    Take a private taxi to Nottingham (see note on Private Taxis to and from airports below).

    From London Heathrow Airport:

1- Take a bus (National Express) from the Airport to Nottingham. There are no changes. However the bus makes about 4 stops along the way and does not take the direct fast route. It normally takes 3hr 30min in total. This would the most economical and the least trouble if arriving with luggage. It is always best to buy a return trip.

2- Take the Underground train (1 change): You need to take the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow to London St. Pancras/Kings Cross station (about 45 min) and then a direct train from St Pancras Station to Nottingham. Total journey time about 3.5 hours (assuming waiting for connection time is not excessive).

3- Take the train (change twice): You need to take the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station and then the the Underground to St Pancras Station and then a direct train to Nottingham. Total journey time about 3 hours.

4- Take a Taxi to London St Pancras Station and then a direct train to Nottingham. This option might be convenient especially if more than one person is travelling. Total journey time about 2hr 30min (about 30min for taxi and 1hr45min for the train and 15 min for changes and handling)

5- Take a private taxi to Nottingham (see note on Private Taxis to and from airports below).

    From Manchester Airport:

1-   Take a train or a taxi to Manchester Piccadilly (15min) and then a train to Nottingham (1hr 47min).

Private Taxis to and from airports

Private taxis are more convenient than public transport. However they could be much more expansive depending on the distance. In most cases, however, sharing a taxi by more than one traveller could become competitive. If you choose this option it is best to pre-book the taxi so that the cost is known beforehand and you have no surprises. Taxis can be booked via web sites such as Info-Taxi.
